LQ Radio Episode #1
It’s finally here – the inaugural episode of the LQ Radio Show. We’re still working through some technical issues, but we are interested in any feedback you may have. In this episode we have me, jtshaw, mcleodnine and rshaw. We covered a variety of topics and overall I think the show came out quite well for a number one. Thanks to John, Dave and Robin for being the first panelists. Let us know what you want to see on the next LQ Radio Show.

LQ Radio Episode #1 Has Been Posted
I am proud to announce that the inaugural episode of the LQ Radio Show has been posted. We had to …
It might also help if when a topic is broached that a short summary is given right off the bat, even if you have to interrupt the panelist to ask them to give a synopsis. Prompting them with, “..and remind us what that is…” or “…this is the story that (fill in the blank), right?” would go a long way to helping us follow. It’s real important to get the “establishing shot” to borrow a phrase from the film world. You did do this with the Linux World segment, for example, even if it was a bit late.
Also, the host and guests should refrain from asking questions of the panelists, generally. Without being addressed directly, everyone tends to talk over eachother. If one of the panelists does ask the other panelists a question, it should be up to the host to immediately interject and direct the question to individuals on the panel, one at a time.
As a “feature request” I’d like to see part of the show consist of one on one interviews instead of the whole thing being an open panel. The open panel is important, I think, and is a good format for a “round up” portion of a show like this, but I think it would be a tighter show with a higher density of interesting information if some direct Q&A’s took place.
I am real encouraged to see this happening, and I don’t mind that everyone’s just feeling their way through this. People shouldn’t be afraid of not being 100% polished professional media personalities when considering a project like this. I’d rather see more less-than-slick productions than fewer highly sophisticated ones.
Thanks for the feedback. Future shows will include a guest, but we want to get all the bugs ironed out before we hit that point.

No ogg?
As with the Podcasts, if you replace .mp3 with .ogg you will get the OGG VORBIS file.

PLEASE NOTE: The original download file was corrupt and missing the end of the show. I have uploaded and verified a new version of the file. The new file also contains slightly better volume levels, but in the end the difference in volume between panelists and the fact that everything was in a single track made getting things better impossible. This is something we’ll work to improve in future shows. Keep the feedback coming.

Err, you’re now posted on Slashdot at http://linux.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/05/17/0347255&tid=188&tid=163&tid=106
. Just a heads up for the up-and-coming slashdotting. ;)
I am working on setting up a bittorrent tracker for this, to help make downloads faster.

Excellent content. Only complaint too much volume level difference and fidelity of guest’s voice. I hope you do this once a week. You did good on keeping the conversation going so there were no dead spots. The best Linux show on the net yet.
The volume levels were bad but I count on this getting improved with some new equipment. You are truly evolving LQ into something more than just a forum, and it is working. It would be fun to hear you being interviewed on the show about the future of LQ. ;)
Linux radio shows that’s soooooo last year ;-)
nice show guys congratulations.
Thanks sparkes ;) Keep up the good work yourself!

I seem to be only able to download the first four MB. I’m very excited about the show.

How are you downloading the file? Is anyone else having this problem?
–jeremy
Could we have streaming media for broadband and dialup users; that way, we wouldn’t have to wait so long for the download. The .mp3 could be another option if people wanted to archive the radio. I think this solve some issues w/ size.
There is a stream available. Additionally, most mp3 players should stream the normal mp3/ogg.

Oaaoooo….It’s great really nice……….
Great idea… I would suggest throwing the notes away! =) Just keep an outline to stay on track but never read line for line. Enjoyed it.
I don’t think anyone had notes that were read verbatim. It sounded like it?

I clicked on it, it tried to fire up noatun, but no sound. Perhaps you should also put the broadcasts out on Realplay. That works on my system.
The show is available in both mp3 and ogg format, which are two of the more common audio formats around. At this time we have no plans to offer the show in additional formats.

As with almost everything “Linux” — It just doesn’t work.
Care to share the problem you are having, so we can work to improve?
–jeremy
You could make available a smaller file size version with a lower mp3 quality as option (or other formats).
hey jeremy, great first show…a suggestion for the newbs out there, myself included; when you get into a new topic (for example, webcore) just give a really brief for-those-that-don’t-know summary, before launching in..
thanks, + great show.
Someone did mention the audio. The exact problem was volume levels; the moderator was normal while the guests on the phone were waaaayy down there. Simply boosting the phone input level or (fancier) getting some compression equipment, would fix it. I looked at it (and the other interview feeds) on a sound editor and the contrast in levels was pretty major. The actual sound quality itself was good.
Thanks for your efforts.

guests need to have a quicky “how to use the equipment” to minimise pops etc, or, is there a pop filter thingy you can run the audio through? or perhaps the guest could get a pop filter (physical).
guests need to be aware of rambling- it is ok in a forum, but not on a radio show. You as host, jeremy, need to have the right to interupt and be yielded to if neccesary. this problem seemed to drop off as the show went on. Second the volume and fidelity.

Works fine here with vanilla FC3 and Helix Player.
umm… “a closer look at moderators” so what are their LQ names?
leave out the “dave (x) do ya wanna move on to the next story…”
great show though, despite its flaws. :D
I have ogg encoder to make ogg from mp3
