LQ Radio Interview #1 – Tom Adelstein and Sam Hiser

A little overdue, but the wait was well worth it. The first in the LQ Radio interview series is now available. The inaugural LQ Radio Show should be ready early next month, so stay tuned! The interview features Tom Adelstein and Sam Hiser. Topics covered include an in-depth look at the Sun Linux strategy, current trends in the Linux market, thoughts on Novell and Red Hat, Linux OEM preloads, the importance of open document formats, Linux in emerging areas, Open Sourcing OS/2, Linux standards and much more. Total running time is 1:16. I’d like to thank both Tom and Sam for taking the time to be the first guests.

LQ Radio Interview #1 – Tom Adelstein and Sam Hiser

A little overdue, but LQ Radio is finally getting off the ground. The first LQ Radio show should be available …

A couple (hopefully helpful) critiques:
– Overall volume (you and Tom) is lower than most files – I ran xmms at 90% instead of about 65% for ITConversations. ITConversations is a good volume compared to my .ogg music (ripped with crip) and other files.
– Sam is way too quiet and takes volume adjustment to understand (and is still too quiet at 100%).
– There are some weird artifacts.

Other than that, I like it! Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the feedback. Some comments:

– The volume difference between me/Tom and Sam made some of the audio cleanup and normalizing extremely difficult. Add the fact that I am still learning and I agree that there is some improvements that need to be made to the audio quality. The good news is that this was the first effort and I am dedicated to making these top notch. I’ve had a couple in-depth conversations with Doug (from IT Conversations). His stuff sounds amazing – BUT, he has invested a significant amount of time and money into his setup and process. We have a long way to go before we’ll be putting out that kind of quality but it is a goal.
– There are some artifacts that I wasn’t able to track down and fix. I’ll work on that for the show and future interviews.

Thanks again and keep the feedback coming.

I did create an ogg, but it looks like I forgot to upload it. I’ll make it available later today. Sorry for the inconvenience.

You probably knew someone would ask… how about a free format? OGG being the obvious suggestion?

Please see above (which was not yet approved when you posted this). An ogg is coming (and will be available for all future shows/interviews).

Really enjoyed the show. Especially enjoyed the cander both Tom and Sam had about Sun’s definition of “Open Source”. Sam had me rolling at his analogy of Sun’s choice of releasing under CDDL.

I also love what Sam said about MS VS Server support of Linux :
“We have to use our powers of resistance”

The first release of gPodder, a Podcast catcher/downloader for GTK+/Gnome written in Java-Gnome is ready for download.

You might want to check it out here:

And yes: you can subscribe to LQ Podcast with this tool :)

I tried to listen to both the mp3 and the ogg. When I clicked on either of them, mplayerplug-in for firefox launched and after about 5 minutes the loading indicator said I was only at about 7% into buffering. I have a 3MB DSL connection. I got tired of waiting. Maybe I’m just impatient? Or, missing something?

The files are quite large (35M and 45M respectively). You may want to try downloading them first and then play them locally.

I hate to say this, ’cause I really like LQ, but the show truly was kind of dull. The fact that there weren’t really fluent conversations didn’t improve much. I really hope you can improve these things, but as long as this doesn’t happen, it’s lugradio for me.

sry,
Elluva

Just to clarify, this wasn’t the LQ Radio show – it was part of the interview series. Because of that, it has a much different “feel” than the show will. That being said, if you have any suggestions on how the interviews could be improved, we’re all ears.

Listened and ejoyed your show, looks forward to the next one. Maybe you can cover Slackware a bit more, I did find that it is a BSD throwoff of sorts, so it has some pretty strong roots. I run slapt-get and get all the latest updates from the -current, did the kernel and alsa updates and Slackware the next encarnation apperas that it will be using Linux 2.4.30 now, a nice step up, one note, do not just let it load and then reboot, make sure your edit your Boot Loader to reflect the new Kernel that is installed, or you will just get a blank look on your monitor and the way I fixed it is took out my trusty boot disk and fixed it, and then was up and running the new Linux 2.4.30.
