Just one tiny, minor correction. Windows Defender is the name of their free spyware removal program. I think what you meant was Windows Live OneCare, which is the whole security suite (not free of course). Microsoft may turn around and say that their OneCare complies with the kernel patch protection but you can’t take Microsoft’s word today.
As for Debian, I think they should just suck it up. I admire that they only use free software and do an extensive check but I think it’s going a bit too far with Firefox. Fedora Core and openSuSE has the fox logo and Mozilla isn’t suing them for trademark violation.
