LinuxQuestions.org Podcast 01.13.05

Everyone seems to be enjoying the Podcasts here, so I’ll post another one. They are usually located here, on my blog. Thinking about it now, maybe it makes sense to move them over to this site, into a separate “Podcast” category. Thoughts?

Hey, this is great! What would be cool is if you could add like, a sound or music at the beginning, for a cool intro. Maybe the KDE_startup would do! Keep producing more!

First like to say that this a great idea, I like it.

But I’m wondering, were there any other formats then mp3 considered? Any specific reason why mp3 was chosen? There are some pending issues with mp3 I believe and I can see few obvious reason why other formats should be used. Not that a big of a deal though.

Right now we are looking at ogg for the live stream, with ogg and mp3 available for the podcast.

Nice. I am looking forward to more discussions (maybe you can invite some friends to exchange ideas about news and such). I didn’t see your podcast at http://www.ipodder.org, do you have a feed for them? I would like to subscribe to your podcasts. About the mp3 format, for long podcasts “on the go” I like “bookmarkable AAC” that keeps track of where you last stoped listening. I believe it only works with iPods though.

Since this is a FOSS related thing,
Why don’t you use OGG format instead of MP3.
In the Podcast you talk about Software Patents!
So why don’t we you patent free OGG?

We will be using ogg for the live stream. The fact that the iPod and many other mp3 players don’t currently support ogg makes doing the Podcast ogg only a bit difficult.

I cannot here anything. I used Windows OS and Media Player 9 as my player. I am new to linux and do not know how to connect to internet from linux. That is why I have used Media Player to here that.

hey, mp3 is awesome. if you do ogg which is ‘cooler’ then people with ipods and such are going to have to convert it over as ipods dont play oggs.

now, i could put linux on my ipod, and put the ogg codec on there, and then have shitty battery life, and take a long time to turn it on. but then who is going to listen to the show? the few hardcore poeple that will just listen to the mp3 with everyone else.

I would like to point out when I say free I’m not talking about price but freedom http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html.

mp3 isn’t ‘awesome’, it’s an inferior format but it has one thing and that’s support on software and devices most people use.

So we have two formats, mp3 which has good support on most software and devices but is not the best format you can find nor is it free or open source, ogg is a technical superior format and is free.

Now the technical difference on ogg and mp3 probably doesn’t mater at all for this purpose so ogg only has that it’s free which I think is a huge difference, I’m strongly sided with the free software movement.

Okay, but mp3 has wider support, yes but I don’t think it matters much for this purpose since the audience are pretty advanced users and use free software and in free software ogg has much better support then mp3 so the support argument really doesn’t have much weight.

So we are left with that ogg is free and mp3 is not, if the people using this think this is a big deal then it seams logical to switch.

the sound quality is great. the information is great.

i would like to make a few comments:

i think its best not to use a riaa song to start the show, they dont like that, but im guilty of that also.

ibm is still registering pattents because if they dont, someone else will do it. thats why all companies do it.

and great show, keep it up. we need more linux/tech podcasts i want tech shows to be #1-10

also i listen to binrev, endgadget, linux link, and mine infonomicon.

That intro is only temporary and is only for the LQ Podcast. The intro for LQ Radio is being worked on now.

For the live streams, we will most likely offer both ogg and mp3. I could work something out to do the same for the podcasts, but due to the lack of player support at this time I don’t think ogg only is a viable alternative (as much as I wish it was). Keep the feedback coming.

I am a Linux newbie. I like to hear a small section for Newbie. I would also like to hear a small section for good Linux books. I would really love to hear some intellectual debate. I truly love the fact that you are starting this up. Keep it crack’ in.

Slightly off topic but quite useful..I found an Ogg player for my Nokia 6600 cellphone, so if the podcast is small enough I can now listen to it on that :-) Note.. must get a bigger memory card..
