Great. Yeah, the sound is a lot better. Sounds like a regular (non online) radio show. The “phone in” panel sounded great! just like you know, “talkback” stuff in the real world- which is great for online. The only sound complaints I have are:
its hard to tell the panel apart (jeremy sounds crystal clear)- the “you were introduced in the last show” is confusing a “hi, I’m dave” would suffice- just to set up who’s who for the ear. Sure, when it’s their first time on the show- keep the full intro.
the other sound problem: occasional metalic “ring” thing, sorta a vibration.
this show is definatly more evolved. :) the so called “comraderie” is there, and it’s not stilted either. I can’t wait to hear the 10th episode. :)

LQ Radio would be a good forum to promote open formats like Vorbis. It wouldn’t kill anyone and probably wouldn’t even hurt that terribly much to add a link to the Ogg Vorbis file along side the MP3. ;)
It’s an option that promotes vendor independent formats, which benefits everybody. (Well maybe except maybe MS and Real, but they cause enough trouble to the market anyway.)
We release an ogg for every show and podcast we do – Open Standards are important. The link is not included in the enclosure as 1) most mp3 players unfortunately don’t understand ogg and 2) it would cause all podcatchers to download both files. Thanks for the feedback.

The topic of “Is a Linux Desktop ready?” as a good topic. Jeremy’s initial comment of “Ready for who?” was very apropos. His use case depicting his parents was an excellent example of a good use case where linux makes sense. Also the earlier segment I heard on the pod cast about EU gov starting to roll out more linux is also quite good.
The real issue that needs to be overcome will be the supportability in the enterprise where the majority of IT Folks are M$ based. Also the management fear of FOSS is still a barrier.

I found the pace a little slow with too many comments about background noise etc. Could have done with some ‘signposting’ – like, still to come Apple and the X86 series, Linux on the ipod but next it’s W Gates’ views on Linux . . .
My main issue is that I would like to be able to skip forward to specific places like the Apple discussion.
I use Windows, OS X, Gentoo Linux, and Solaris 8(not by choice).
I recently bought an HP AMD64 laptop, specifically zv5410us.
Size doesn’t bother me, I use it at work instead of the provided SUN workstation.
Broadcom wireless works with ndiswrapper.
I like OS X’s windows management.
For starters, all an application’s windows come forward when that application is selected.
Kinda like every app being on it’s own virtual desktop.
Command-tab cycles trough application, not just all open windows.
Command-~ cycles through windows for active app.
A full taskbar in windows or kicker in KDE ain’t much help in finding the window one wants.
Kompose for kde implements OS X’s expose feature though.
I’d really like to replace my late 2001 iBook with a pentium-m powered one.
1024×768 resolution is a pain sometimes though.
Between Linux and Office on the Mac, MS Windows has become a gaming platform to me.
Finally, compiling KDE ain’t that bad. Emerge kdebase that’s all that is needed to actually log into KDE. If you have >= 512 MB of RAM, emerge with kdeenablefinal USE flag to speed up compilation significantly.
My times for compiling kde 3.4.1 on an athlon-xp 2500+, A7N8X deluxe, 512MB tower.
x11-libs/qt 31 minutes and 49 seconds.
kdelibs 33 minutes and 46 seconds.
kdebase-meta another 99 minutes and 53 seconds.
kdemultimedia-meta another 55 minutes.
After that I emerge individual packages, kdf kicker-applets kdvi, kdenetwork-filesharing, etc.
Gnome-light 59 minutes 27 seconds
Full Gnome another 94 minutes 58 seconds not counting 34 minutes building mozilla sans composer, irc, and mail.
Note: a few gnome dependecies were already satisfied gtk+, xine-lib, and maybe a few others.
